Eunice aldermen honored former Mayor Curtis Joubert with a proclamation that also names the entrance to the Liberty Theater for him.
Mayor Scott Fontenot said the signage at the theater will be a way for the city to remember Joubert, who was instrumental in reviving the theater.
Alderman Chad Andrepont read the proclamation written by Joel Savoy at Tuesday’s city meeting.
The proclamation stated, “Mayor Curtis Joubert was largely responsible for transforming the Liberty Theater into a nationally and internationally known showcase and emblem of our local and regional music and culture; and ... regularly promoted involvement with the Rendez Vous des Cajuns and other programming of the Liberty Theater; and made a point to personally welcome visitors arriving to the theater at its entrance at the intersection of Park Avenue and South 2nd Street.”
“I remember Mayor Joubert from growing up as a kid here in Eunice. The thing I remember most about him is him being at the Liberty, in front of the Liberty constantly promoting everything that had to do with the Liberty Theater,” Andrepont said.
Savoy, who heads the non-profit Association for the Liberty Theatre of Eunice, said the group received its IRS tax-exempt status.
He also said an all-day strategic planning session was held to solidify the vision for the theater. Community stakeholders were surveyed as part of the planning, he said.
