Early voting numbers are leading Cheryl Milburn, St. Landry Parish registrar of voters, to predict the turnout for the Nov. 6 election may be as high as 60 percent.
As of Friday afternoon, there had been 316 votes cast in Eunice and 2,047 placed in Opelousas.
Early voting continued Saturday and Monday through Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“We’ve been real busy since Tuesday,” Milburn said. The only day that wasn’t busy was Thursday and that is attributed to rain that day.
“Compared to other elections this is super,” she said.
Milburn, who has been registrar since 2014, said, “Since I’ve been registrar this is the most I’ve had.”
By the time early voting ends Tuesday, Milburn thinks the vote total may double.
The totals do not include absentee ballots.
“Judging on what we have here I would predict about 50 or 60 percent turnout,” she said.
Milburn said the number of candidates in the election is helping drive voters to the polls. Municipal and St. Landry Parish School Board elections are included on the ballots across the parish.
“The turnout has bene good, but we are looking for better,” she said.
According to the Secretary of State’s website, there are 6,215 people registered to vote in the Eunice municipal election.
