The following are from the September 1998 files of The Eunice News.
Judge Nilas Young was honored for 50 years of membership in the Rotary Club. Earlier in the year, Young was honored for 50 years spent in the practice of law. Rotary members from Mamou also were present for the observance. Young was instrumental in organizing the Mamou club 48 years ago. J.B. LeRay described Young as “... a man for all seasons — a citizen, statesman and warrior.”
Rep. Chris John thanked 7th Congressional District voters for his election win in an advertisement.
The Bobcats lost 14-13 to Port Barre in the St. Landry Parish Jamboree. Staff writer John Burson reported the Bobcats were hampered by a fumble and interception. Coach Paul Trosclair observed that his team was inexperienced. The Bobcats took the first lead when Derrick Allison broke through the middle and raced 49 yards for a touchdown with 6:23 left in the first 10-minute half. Jacob Brown kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
The St. Edmund Blue Jays defeated the Westminster Crusaders 14-0 in the John Ed Bradley Memorial Football Jamboree. The start of the Blue Jay ground effort was Chuck Bowie, who racked up 96 yards in 14 carries.
