The following are from the September 1998 files of The Eunice News.
Hurricane Earl bypassed the Eunice area and headed into eastern Louisiana and western Mississippi. The Eunice News interviewed L.B. Childs, of Basile and a native of Eunice, who recalled Hurricane Audrey. Childs said Audrey produced the kind of tragedy “which tugs at your heart strings.”
The Eunice High School agriculture class was growing poinsettias to sell around Thanksgiving, according to Kerry Saucier, adviser and instructor. Class members were Jonathon Bushnell, Curley Chapman, Kyle Fontenot, Beaugh Frey, Chris Fuselier, Brandon Israel, John Klein, Mitchell Launey, Branson Miller, Thomas Miller, Biko Monbelly, Preston Stevens, Reginald Thomas, Jared Ward, Michael Watkins, Marcus Thomas and Joshua Janice.
Eunice aldermen were skeptical about a plan to use the Dresser Building for a vehicle salvage facility. The proposal was for a wholesale parts business.
The St. Landry Parish School Board was discussing a tax election to raise teacher pay and stop a “brain drain” to Lafayette Parish.
