The following are from the June 1976 files of The Eunice News.
Mrs. Virgie Marcantel was named Woman of the Year by the St. Thomas More Ladies Altar Society. She was pictured with the Rev. Harry Quick and Mrs. Silton Matt, president of the club.
The annual spring mixed doubles tournament at the Eunice Country Club included awards presented to Anita Voinche and Reginald Keller, first place, first flight; Pat Richard and Roger Brandt, second place, first flight; Bob Fontenot and Lonell White, third place, first flight; and John Dean Voinche and Lois Miller, consolation, first flight; Barbara Guillory and L.J. “Red” Aucoin, first place, second flight; Lynn Brown and Jacque Pucheu Jr., second place, second flight; Carol Higgins and Bob Quirk, third place, second flight; and John Verwyvelt and Sherry Cormier, consolation, second flight.
Perry Pitre, Ted Wasmuth and Bert Miller were shown in a photo holding a 97-pound amberjack caught about 70 miles offshore. Other members of the party were Leonce Thibodeaux, Hubert Fontenot, Gene Duplechin and Steve Meaux.
Fruge Lumber Co. was advertising Kentucky whiskey barrels for $17.66 each
Drusilla Rozas was selected Licensed Practical Nurse of the Year at Moosa Memorial Hospital.
Gladney Manuel, chairman of the State Highway Board, said the board received bids on projects, which included the La. 13 route through Eunice. The job was to cost more than $1 million and was to begin at 1st and Laurel, cross the railroad tracks and join La. 13 north of Eunice. The project had been 20 years in the making with numerous routes rejected in at least three city administrations.
