The Eunice Post Office, closed since Sept. 23, 2019, may reopen by the end of March.
Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot said he received information about the March reopening this week.
Fontenot had considered asking the Board of Aldermen for a resolution requesting information from the U.S. Postal Service about the building. Fontenot and the Board said they were satisfied with information received from the Postal Service.
Fontenot said he was told the roof project is planned in June for the building closed due to mold issues.
The building was first opened in 1938.
The Postal Service statement sent Monday to The Eunice News follows.
“The safety and well-being of postal customers and employees is a priority for the Postal Service. The temporary suspension of the Eunice Post Office occurred due to facility-related issues. As we continue to make improvements in our facility, at this time, we anticipate resumption of full services within the next 90 days. The U.S. Postal Service is governed by the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA), which requires that Federal buildings leased or constructed after 1968 meet applicable standards for people who have a disability. The Eunice Post Office does provide accommodation provisions to customers on an as-needed basis and the office has approximately 30 employees.
“The Eunice Post Office will remain temporarily suspended until we are sure we can safely resume operations and we apologize for any inconvenience that may have been experienced by customers living in the Eunice community.”
