The Roberts Cove German Heritage Museum is preparing once again for this year’s Germanfest.
The 24th annual Germanfest will be held Oct. 6-7 at the festival grounds in Roberts Cove.
This year the museum will be taking a look at the first German settlement in northern prairies of Acadia Parish.
The settlement of Fabacher was founded by Joseph Fabacher and Zeno Huber in 1870. The successes of the German immigrants in this settlement influenced the first German settlers in Roberts Cove to choose that location.
To be highlighted this year are the families of Peter Bollich, Joseph Christ, John Frey, Joseph Fabacher, Zeno Huber, Joseph Frank Kratzer, Christian Ruppert, Dienegott Schultz and Vitus Wilfert. The Frey and Fabacher families in New Orleans were parishioners of Fr. Peter Leonard Thevis at Holy Trinity Parish in New Orleans. Fr. Thevis was instrumental in helping the families immigrate to the United States.
The museum would also like to exhibit a variety of historical Roberts Cove items and is asking for items to display for the festival. If you helped out with your family history items in the past years, please contact the museum if you are interested in loaning them again.
