The pandemic could not stop the members of the NAUW-Eunice Branch from observing their usual “Women in History Month” activity and selecting their honorees.
This year the honorees were those who dedicate time and service as well as talents to the lives of others in the medical field by helping doctors with their patients’ health. They are in the nursing field and NAUW’s Woman of the Year is a member who has been the outstanding one of the organization and who has rendered service above and beyond what is asked and expected of the membership.
First, those honored for their service to the community this year were Monica Balque, Shameca Chevis, Judy Chapman Doyle, Ashley Gobert, Doretha F. Jackson, Marla Manuel, Pamela Malveaux, and. Damiana Slaughter.
Patricia Darby Harrison, a member of the Branch for many years, and second vice president, was selected as “2021- 2022 Woman of the Year.”
Harrison, a quiet person by nature, but active in the organization, has been very successful in getting many projects completed without making too much noise. As chairperson of the programs carried out by the Branch, she along with the president have seen that projects such as donations to schools, food for shut-ins, a school uniform drive, recognition of members for various reasons was carried out, and recognition of ministers in the community, and women in the community, to name a few, were done despite the fact that the Branch was unable to have face-to-face programs this year. Harrison is a teacher at Central Middle School, is the mother of one son, two daughters, and grandmother of 10.
