A house at 521 Fred St. in Eunice was removed in a joint effort by the city, St. Landry Parish Government and the St. Landry Parish Solid Waste Commission.
Parish President Jessie Bellard said, “We started the cleanup process on some adjudicated properties one being in Eunice on Fred Street last week. That was completed with the help of Solid Waste and their team over there and the city of Eunice,” he said at Wednesday’s Parish Council meeting in Opelousas.
“We are doing some other code enforcement related activities right now when time permits and the tractors are available to do grass cutting,” he added.
Eunice Mayor Scott Fontenot said removing the house took two days.
Toward the end of last year the city started discussions with then Parish President Bill Fontenot about acting on dilapidated properties in Eunice, he said.
There wasn’t much progress until Bellard was appointed parish president by the Parish Council, he said.
There are four other properties on a list submitted in February requesting parish action. They are 230 Olivia St., 230 S. Mallet St., 460 N. Mallet St., and 720 Carron St.
The properties have adjudicated to the parish and city government due to the failure pay property taxes.
