As school starts this Thursday for Eunice public elementary students, parents can take comfort that the schools are largely out-performing their counterparts in the parish and matching or exceeding those in the state.
A sampling of the benchmark LEAP scores released in June show East, Eunice, Glendale and Highland third-grade students were testing above their parish peers.
Mathematics is an area where the Eunice third-graders lagged by state peers.
The lead was maintained at the fifth grade level at Central Middle school.
Eunice students historically been at the state level or greater on the spring tests.
Mastery is the state’s benchmark for achievement.
The tests are scored at Advanced, Mastery, Basic, Approaching basic and Unsatisfactory.
Tests are in three subject areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics and Social Studies.
Percent of third-grade students scoring Mastery and above in English Language Arts were:
49%, East Elementary;
51%, Eunice Elementary;
48%, Glendale Elementary; and
37%, Highland Elementary.
In the state, 46% of third-grade students scored Mastery or above in English Language Arts.
In St. Landry Parish, 41% of third-grade students scored Mastery or above in English Language Arts.

30%, East Elementary;
33%, Eunice Elementary;
30%, Glendale Elementary; and
48%, Highland Elementary.
In the state, 43% of third-grade students scored Mastery or above in Mathematics.
In St. Landry Parish, 31% of third-grade students scored Mastery or above in Mathematics.

31%, East Elementary;
24%, Eunice Elementary;
19%, Glendale Elementary; and
32%, Highland Elementary.
In the state, 24% percent of third-grade student scored Mastery or greater in Social Studies.
In St. Landry Parish, 21% of third-grade students scored Mastery or above in Social Studies.
Eunice Central Middle fifth-graders were scoring equal or better than their parish and state peers in scoring Master or better.
Forty percent of Central Middle fifth-grade students scored Mastery and above in English Language Arts.
In the state and state, 39% of fifth-graders scored Mastery and above.
Forty percent of Central Middle fifth-grade students scored Mastery and above in Mathematics.
In the state, 34% of fifth-graders scored Mastery or above in Mathematics.
In the parish, 31% of fifth-graders scored Mastery or above in Mathematics.
In Social Studies, 23% of Central Middle fifth-graders scored Mastery or greater.
In the state, 25% of fifth-graders scored Mastery or better in Social Studies.
In the parish, 18% of fifth-graders scored Mastery or better in Social Studies.
