Keep Louisiana Beautiful is kicking off a campaign: “Keep Your Butts In Your Pants.”
Cigarette butts remain the most littered item in the country. Ninety-five percent of cigarette filters are not biodegradable. Littering cigarette butts are illegal, unsightly and harmful to waterways and wildlife. Thirty-two percent of litter in storm drains is tobacco products.
Donna Baltakis, director of Keep Eunice Beautiful, will be out and about giving free pocket ashtrays and a small display poster to some stores in Eunice. Each store will agree to place a display at the check-out counter and will distribute and encourage the use of one pocket ashtray to each person who purchases a pack of cigarettes.
Baltakis said, “The goal of this campaign is to empower smokers to create a cleaner community by disposing of cigarette butts properly.
