The Louisiana National Guard offers a variety of benefits including free tuition for those interested in serving their country.
“We’re the only branch that gives the tuition exemption,” said Master Sgt. Chip Filipi of the La. National Guard. “The legislature in Louisiana passed a law where you will be allowed to go to any public school in the state tuition exempt if you’re in the National Guard.”
The exemption applies to any university such as LSUE and any college such as South Louisiana Community College.
Filipi added, “Plus, we give them $384 a month while they’re a full-time student, and they have opportunities to get bonuses. Even more, they have a chance to get $1,000.”
Those wishing to join the La. National Guard will serve one weekend a month and two weeks a year. As Filipi explained, “the two weeks is usually during the summer, so we don’t mess with college.”
Filipi further explained those wishing to join have to be at least 17-years-old. “They can sign if they’re a junior in high school,” he said. “High school students can join going into their senior year if they’re 17-years-of-age and go to drill one weekend a month. They will get a check the whole time they’re in school every month, and all that time counts toward their contract. Once they graduate high school, then they will go to basic training.”
Upon joining the La. National Guard, people can pursue a job from the wide range of options available. According to Filipi and new recruiter Sgt. Josh Bordelon, the La. National Guard offers any job such as medical, infantry, aviation, engineering, military police, cooks, and mechanics.
“You have a part-time job with full-time benefits,” concluded Filipi, “and you get a retirement. If all else fails, we have full time employment. And, we’re home everyday.”
