Lady Jays fall in district finale

Catholic High of Pointe Coupee claimed its 10th straight district title as the Lady Hornets grabbed a 8-1 win Wednesday over the St. Edmund Lady Jays.

St. Ed’s threatened in the first when Kennedy Ardoin reached on an error and Jenna Smith singled but the Lady Jays failed to score.

CHPC (17-6 overall, 4-0) in District 5-1A) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of second inning, begun when Taylor Bonaventure singled and scored on a double by Hannah Dugas.

The Lady Hornets pushed ahead 2-0 when Dugas scored on a sacrifice by Maddie Jarreau.

St. Ed’s Alice Brown singled in the bottom of the inning but she didn’t advance past second base.

Catholic-PC added two more runs in the top of the third inning as Rebecca Frey reached on a fielder’s choice, Blaire Bizette walked and both scored on a hit by Bonaventure.

The Lady Jays had another chance to score in the bottom of the fourth when Anna Belle Fontenot singled and Brown walked but neither scored.

CHPC pushed ahead 5-0 in the top of the fifth when Frey reached on an error and scored on another Lady Jay miscue.

St. Edmund avoided the shutout when Smith singled to right field and courtesy runner Mary Helen Miller scored on a Catholic-PC error.

The Lady Hornets added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh, begun when Bizette reached on an error and scored on a double by Bonaventure.

Isabel Guerin advanced on a Lady Jay error and Bonaventure scored on a ground out by Dugas as the Lady Hornets moved ahead, 7-1.

Guerin scored the game’s final run on a ground out by Jarreau.

St. Edmund was limited to five hits, led by Smith’s 2-for-3 outing.

Bizette earned the complete game win as she struck out eight and walked two.

Karleigh Soileau was handed the loss as she three and allowed three earned runs on six hits.

Bonaventure led CHPC as she went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

St. Edmund (13-5 overall, 2-2 in District 5-1A) will hold Senior Night on Monday against Crowley before closing the regular season with road games against Rayne and Westlake.

The LHSAA will release the playoff brackets on Friday.

Catholic High of Pointe Coupee is the top ranked team in the Division IV power rankings, while St. Edmund sits at No. 5.

The top 16 teams make the playoffs with top eight hosting the first round games.
