Public hearings are scheduled ordinances to open the way for the city of Eunice to form its own library and break away from the Opelousas-Eunice Library, which was formed in 1967.
Mayor Scott Fontenot explained at the June meeting the split was discussed when Rusty Moody was Eunice mayor.
Moody’s death and other events kept the city from acting, he said.
Fontenot believes the city can run its own library and save money.
The city sends $154,000 to the Opelousas-Eunice Public Library, he said, but the city of Eunice pays the utilities, janitorial services and supplies for the library in Eunice.
The library ordinances are the the subject of a public hearing scheduled at 6:15 p.m. before the Board meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Eunice Municipal Complex.
The Board is vote on adoption of the library ordinances — one to repeal the establishment of the joint system and the other to establish the Eunice Public Library.
Also placed on the agenda an agenda-setting meeting Wednesday is a presentation of a strategic plan for Eunice.
Lorna Guynn, a planner with St. Landry Economic Development, was at the agenda meeting and said work on the strategic plan began in October. Meetings have been held since then to focus on various areas.
The city and LSUE partnered on the plan with leadership from Guynn.
Tuesday’s meeting also includes several properties considered from possible demolition or pressure for action by owners. The properties include 151 South St. George, 341 East Ash and 251 College Road.
Fontenot said a the Board should discuss the old National Guard building and the old hospital.
