LSUE has $13M-plus in deferred maintenance

A list of deferred maintenance at LSUE totaled $13.2 million in a list presented by Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne along with a proposed budget.
The list was reported in a USA today Network of Louisiana story on March 6 in The Daily Advertiser.
The LSU System had more than $1 billion of deferred maintenance, University of Louisiana System had $364 million, Southern University System had $184 million, and the Louisiana Community Technical College System had $150 million.
The Board of Regents website refers to deferred maintenance as major repairs.
LSUE Chancellor Kimberly Russell said the major upcoming project on the campus is a $2.5 million renovation of the Science Building’s chemistry laboratories, which includes replacing 18 fume hoods.
“It really has do to with a life-saving hazardous things,” she said.
Dr. John Hamlin, head of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics, said some of the chemistry lab ventilation systems are only 50 percent effective.
Funding for the renovation is coming from the Board of Regents, Russell said.
The Science Building was the first facility on the campus and was constructed in 1967, she said.
“It just needs to be gutted and completely redone,” Russell said. A complete renovation would cost up to $15 million, she said.
Other areas cited by Russell include:
— The Health and Physical Education Center where the the swimming pool area needs to be gutted. “It is so under-utilized that it would be great if we could fill it in and make it real recreation area.”
— The tennis courts are falling apart. “These are beyond resurfacing. You are going to have go in and start over.”
Russell said the last tennis court resurfacing project she was involved in was for four courts and cost about $250,000.
— The campus’ national championship baseball and softball teams need new facilities.
“They are not at level they should be for national championship D2 teams. They are made out of cinder block. We’ve got a pretty outdated locker room area, concession area.”
The softball facility renovations would cost about $2.5 million and the baseball stadium would be $4 million to $5 million, she said.
— A chilled water loop that feeds the entire campus needs repair.
But the Science Building is at the top of Russell’s list because the building is key to not only science majors, but nursing and health sciences programs, she said.
The campus’ renovation projects have been put on hold for up to 15 years, she said.
“We’ve really kept them functional and clean and their appearance on the outside and in the classrooms is really good,” she said. “We’ve kept up with technology. It is just the infrastructure is what’s failing.”
Russell noted tight budgets.
“I think we are very good stewards with the funding that we do get and that is only $4.6 million from the state out of a $20 million budget,” she said.
