McGovern wins assessor’s race

Sherri Zeringue McGovern defeated Blair Briggs to win election as St. Landry Parish Assessor.
McGovern won 60% of the 28,853 votes cast in Saturday’s election, according to complete but unofficial returns.
McGovern will succeed Ryhn Duplechain who has served 33 years as assessor.
McGovern took 41% of the vote in the Oct. 12 primary followed by Briggs with 33% and Garett Duplechain, with 26%.
Duplechain is the son of the retiring assessor.
McGovern is a certified public accountant and has headed the sales tax collector for the Sheriff’s Office. 
Briggs is a businessman and served two terms as an alderman in Opelousas.
