A free school lunch program stumbled on its initial outing with a hour and half delay in delivery to the New Zion Baptist Church in Eunice on Monday.
The meals were scheduled to have arrived at 11:45 a.m., but it as nearly 1:30 p.m. when a school bus arrived with the meals for volunteers to pass out.
The program, Three O’Clock Project, will do the meal handouts again at 11:45 a.m. Monday at New Zion Baptist Church.
After Monday’s incident the St. Landry Parish School Board sent out a letter that included, “To St. Landry Parish families, the district would like to apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced today when coming to one of the designated sites to receive meals.”
The delivery delay was attributed to food trucks arriving late at the School Board office and the demand for the food was greater than anticipated.
““If you received food that wasn’t a meal, it’s because our central office staff put together items to give out rather than giving out nothing when the Three O’Clock Project ran out off food,” the School Board letter stated.
The School Board also plans to partner with the Healthy Food Collaborative to deliver meals to homes.
