The 46th leg of Old Glory Relay runners will be running through Eunice Wednesday on their way to their final destination of Tampa, Florida, for a Veterans Day, Nov. 11, ceremony.
The run is a fundraiser for Team Red White Blue, a veteran’s outreach. Team RWB is a national non-profit with a mission of connecting veterans to their community through physical and social activity.
The relay runners, running from Ragley, will be expecting to arrive in Eunice between 3 and 5 p.m. It will have traveled from Seattle, Washington, beginning on Sept. 11.
There will be a reception at 5:30 p.m. at the end of the day’s journey on Wednesday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8971 at U.S. 190. There the team will be served dinner and visit with veterans on hand. The public is encouraged to come out and show their support for their cause.
The 47th leg of the relay will depart from the VFW Post on Thursday morning and travel to Livonia.
At the end of the its run the “One” flag will have traveled 4,600 miles in two months time.
VFW Post 8971 Commander Roger Veillon said, “The purpose of the relay is to raise funds and awareness across the country. What better what to do this. The post is looking forward to this date and will plan to greet them and serve them.”
Terry Matte, quartermaster of the VFW, added, “We encourage all citizens of our city to greet them, bring your American flag, line up on our main through way, Laurel Avenue. We have also learned that our police officers will be on hand to direct traffic on Laurel during the time the runners will be passing through.”
There are additional plans in the making to welcome runners at Eunice Manor, located next door to the Post Hall.
“The runners are planning to run through the parking area lot at the manor, and veterans will be around to greet them,” said Matte.
Matte also added that at the veterans tank located in the parking lot of the post hall Fire District 4 will have its tanker trucks and plans are the firefighters will perform a “water wall” across the skies to depict a “water rainbow” in honor of all veterans and our RWB team. “It will be as we refer to a “Tears” of water.”
Team RWB chapters in Louisiana include Shreveport-Bossier, Lafayette, Fort Polk/Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Covington/Mandeville, and New Orleans.
