Parish sales tax collections up 1.8% over a year ago

Total sales tax collections in St. Landry Parish through October is over the year-to-date total of 2018, according to statistics released by the St. Landry Parish School Board Sales Tax Division.
Total sales tax collections in St. Landry Parish through October were $59,061,875, up $1,063,186 — 1.8% over the 10-month total from 2018.
The parish sales and use tax total includes collections for the parish government, School Board, solid waste, law enforcement, special tax districts and municipalities. The total does not include state collections.
There are 18 parish entities collecting sales taxes in St. Landry Parish.
In October, parish sales tax collections totaled $6,060,417, up 4.8% — $278,507 — over October 2018 collections.
From September to October, total parish collections were up 1.5% — $92,083.
Year-to-date sales tax collections in Eunice were $4,535,657, down 2.4% — $111,997 — from the 10-month 2018 total of $4,647,654.
Eunice collections in October were $462,284, up 2.9% from the October 2018 total of $449,393.
But Eunice collections from September to October dropped 8.2% — $41,327.
The 0.25% sales tax approved by Eunice voters for public safety pay raises was collected in October, but won’t appear in the sales tax number until November’s report.
In Opelousas, sales tax collections through October were $8,299,031, a 1.9% increase from the October 2018 total of $8,147,048.
Opelousas sales tax collections in October were up 1.4% compared to October 2018.
But for September to October, Opelousas sales tax collections dropped 4.3 percent — $37,099.
In St. Landry Parish Road District 1, which collects a 2 percent sales tax in unincorporated areas of the parish to fund the Smooth Ride Home program, the 10-month total was $5,568,437, down 4.2% from the $5,811,048 total in 2018.
The road district’s October total was $589,723, which was up 9.5% from the October 2018 total and up 11.8% from the September total of $527,586.
The local sales tax rates in Eunice are 2.2 percent city and 3.55 percent parish.
Local sales tax rates in unincorporated St. Landry Parish are 5.55 percent parish tax rates that includes the 2 percent Smooth Ride Home Program tax.
The sales tax numbers include a use tax, which is paid on items used, stored or consumed. The sales tax is collected on a transaction.
The numbers reported for October collections reflect sales in September.
