Parish sales tax collections up 6.9%over last year

St. Landry Parish sales tax collections in the first three months of this year continued to outpace the same period in 2018.
Total parish sales tax collections through March were 6.9 percent more than in the the first three months of 2018, according to statistics released by the St. Landry Parish School Board Sales Tax Division.
The parish total through March was $17,298,539, up $1,116,590 from 2018’s tally through March.
The parish sales and use tax total includes collections for the parish government, School Board, solid waste, law enforcement, special tax districts and municipalities. The total does not include state collections.
In Eunice, the January to March sales tax total was $1,371,847, up 1.7 percent or $22,899 from the 2018 total of $1,348,948.
In Opelousas, the three-month total was $2,456,310, a 3 percent or $72,516 increase over the $2,383,794 collected in the same period in 2018.
In St. Landry Parish Road District 1, which collects a 2 percent sales tax in unincorporated areas of the parish to fund the Smooth Ride Home program, the first three month sales tax collections totaled $1,596,216, up 8.4 percent from the $1,472,200 collected in the same period in 2018.
In a March to March 2018 comparison:
Eunice collections this March were $421,192, up 7.3 percent;
Opelousas collections in March were $724,652, up 3.5 percent;
Road District 1 collections in March were $440,816, down 1.5 percent; and
St. Landry Parish total collections in March were $5,088,409, up 3.8 percent.
The parish total in March was 17.4 percent less than in February; the Eunice March total was 3.5 percent over the February total; the Opelousas March total was up 8 percent over February; and Road District 1 in March was 17.6 percent lower than the February total.
The local sales tax rates in Eunice are 2.2 percent city and 3.55 percent parish.
Local sales tax rates in unincorporated St. Landry Parish are 5.55 percent parish tax rates that includes the 2 percent Smooth Ride Home Program tax.
The sales tax numbers include a use tax, which is paid on items used, stored or consumed. The sales tax is collected on a transaction.
