Parish sales tax collections rebound

Year-to-date St. Landry Parish sales tax collections through August totaled $47,033,123, up 1% over the same eight-month period a year ago, according to statistics released by the St. Landry Parish School Board Sales Tax Division.
The report shows a rebound in total collections. In July, the seventh-month collections were down 0.8% from the total in July 2018.
The parish sales and use tax total includes collections for the parish government, School Board, solid waste, law enforcement, special tax districts and municipalities. The total does not include state collections.
Eunice sales for year total $3,569761, down 4.6% from the same eight-month period in 2018.
In Opelousas, the year-to-date collections through August were $6,595,204, which is only $7,126 or 0.1% off from 2018’s year-to-date total of $6,602,330.
In St. Landry Parish Road District 1, which collects a 2 percent sales tax in unincorporated areas of the parish to fund the Smooth Ride Home program, the eight-month total was $4,451,129, down 3.8% or $177,344 from the same period in 2018.
In August to August 2018 comparisons:
— Eunice sales tax collections of $429,639 were down 0.9% from August 2018.
— Opelousas sales tax collections of $815,492 were up 8.7% from August 2018.
— Road District 1 sales tax collections of $544,636 were down 8.2% from August 2018.
— Total St. Landry Parish sales collections of $5,736,290, up 2.3% from August 2018.
In August to July comparisons:
— Eunice sales tax collections of $429,639 were down $36 from the July.
— Opelousas sales tax collections were down 2.7 5.9% from the July total of $837,976.
— Road District 1 sales tax collections were down 4.2% from the July total of $593,263.
— Total St. Landry Parish sales tax collections were down 2.7% from the July total of $5,892,715.
The local sales tax rates in Eunice are 2.2 percent city and 3.55 percent parish.
Local sales tax rates in unincorporated St. Landry Parish are 5.55 percent parish tax rates that includes the 2 percent Smooth Ride Home Program tax.
The sales tax numbers include a use tax, which is paid on items used, stored or consumed. The sales tax is collected on a transaction.
