Parish sales tax collections still ahead of last year
Sales tax collections in St. Landry Parish remain above a year ago, but September revenues are mostly down from August and below September 2019, according to a report from the St. Landry Parish School Board’s tax division.
Total sales tax revenue in St. Landry Parish through September was $57,296,278, up 8.1% or $4,294,820 over the same period in 2019.
The sales tax numbers are gross collections.
In September, the parish sales tax collections were $5,886,140, down 1.4% or $82,194 from September 2019. The September collections were down 5.7% or $352,899 from the August collections.
The September sales tax figures primarily reflect sales in August.
The parish sales and use tax total includes collections for the parish government, School Board, solid waste, law enforcement, special tax districts and municipalities.
The total doesn’t include state sales taxes.
In Eunice, sales tax collections through September were $4,763,031, up 16.9% or $689,658 over the same period in 2019. The September collections were $486,382, down 3.4% or $17,229 from September 2019. September collections were also down 4% or $20,046 from August revenues.
In Opelousas, collections through September totaled $7,800,299, up 4.5% or $334,632 over the same nine months in 2019. September collections were $842,155, down 3.3% or $28,308 from September 2019 and down 2% or $17,506 from August revenues.
In Road District 1, which collects a 2% sales tax in unincorporated St. Landry Parish to fund the Smooth Ride Home Program, year-to-date collections through September were $5,766,142, up 15.8% or $787,919 over the same nine-month period in 2019. The September collections of $573,634 are 8.7% or $46,048 over September 2019. The September collections are are up 9.2% or $58,296 over the August collections.
Local sales tax rates in unincorporated St. Landry Parish are 5.55% parish tax rates that includes the 2% Smooth Ride Home Program tax.
The sales tax numbers include a use tax, which is paid on items used, stored or consumed. The sales tax is collected on a transaction.
