The Southeast Neighborhood Center is getting a $50,000 playground unit, which may be completely installed this week.
Mayor Scott Fontenot said the equipment meets the latest safety standards and includes slides, stairs, swings, benches and other features.
“My goal is to get all our parks up to today’s standards. They haven’t been touched in years,” he said.
The playground equipment at Southeast was planned about four years ago and it was in the 2015 budget, but was delayed until now, he said.
The playground adds to a pavilion, ball fields and picnic area at the Southeast Center.
Fontenot said field work has also been done at the Harris Edition ball fields recently.
Drainage work also is needed at the ball field at the Southeast Center, he said.
Fontenot said he would like to see the city install two splash pads in the city.
The splash pads would cost about $60,000 each, he said.
“I would like to focus on recreational opportunities for kids,” he said.
