Sales tax collections trending down

After months of sales tax growth through the COVID-19 pandemic, collections from January to March in St. Landry Parish trended down, according to a monthly report released by the St. Landry Parish School Board sales tax division.

Total sales tax collections for St. Landry Parish in March were $5,712,925, down from $6,107,045 in February and $7,895,905 in January.

The parish sales and use tax total includes collections for the parish government, School Board, solid waste, law enforcement, special tax districts and municipalities.

The totals do not include state sales taxes. The sales tax numbers are gross collections. There are 18 sales tax collection districts in the parish.

The parish total through March was $19,715,875, up $1,162,480 or 6.3% from the same three months in 2020.

The March collections of $5,712,925, were up $531,382 or 10.3% over March 2020 collections. The March collections are down $394,120 or 6.5% from February collections.

In Eunice, the January through March collections were $1,697,564, up $177,784 or 11.7% from the same period in 2020. March collections were $491,109, up $34,716 or 7.6% over March 2020, but down $63,266 or 11.4% from February collections.

Eunice collections in January were $652,080 and February they were $554,375.

In Opelousas, collections through March were $2,598,88, up $87,422 or 3.5% over the same period in 2020. March collections were $790,815, up $61,038 or 8.4% over March 2020 and up $19,873 or 2.65 from February.

In Road District 1 where a 2% sales tax is collected in unincorporated areas of the parish to fund the Smooth Ride Home Program, the collections through March totaled $1,943,391, up $84,054 or 4.5% more than the same period in 2020. March collections of $531,606 were up $55,016 or 11.5% over March 2020, but down $117,237 or 18.1% from February.

Local sales tax rates in unincorporated St. Landry Parish are 5.55% parish tax rates that includes the 2% Smooth Ride Home Program tax.

The local sales tax rates in Eunice are 2.45% city and 3.55% parish.

The sales tax numbers include a use tax, which is paid on items used, stored or consumed. The sales tax is collected on a transaction.
