St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Grand Coteau will elebrate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the parish.
The celebration will include a commemorative tour of the historic parish cemetery and grounds from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
St. Charles Borromeo Parish was established in 1819. It is the third oldest parish in the Diocese of Lafayette, pre-dated only by St. Martin de Tours Church in St. Martinville and St. Landry Church in Opelousas. St. Charles Borromeo Parish was formed some 99 years before the Diocese of Lafayette was created out of what was then the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
A special Bicentennial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Sunday. In addition to many members of the Jesuit Order who have served the parish in the past and present, all friends and former parishioners are invited to join in the special celebration recognizing 200 years of Catholic faith in the community.
St. Charles Borromeo Church is located at 174 Church St., Grand Coteau.
