St. Landry Parish sales tax collections up 1.4%

The growth in St. Landry Parish sales tax collections slowed in June when they were up 1.4 percent over the same period in 2018.
In May, sales tax collections were up 3.4 percent over the same period in 2018.
According to statistics released by the St. Landry Parish School Board Sales Tax Division, sales tax collections in the parish totaled $35,044,015 through June. That was $486,076 more than was reported in the same period in 2018.
The parish sales and use tax total includes collections for the parish government, School Board, solid waste, law enforcement, special tax districts and municipalities. The total does not include state collections.
The slowdown for total parish sales tax collection was seen in June to June comparison in which collections were down 7.7 percent. June’s total collections were $5,770,510 for the parish’s 18 sales-tax-collecting entities.
Total sales collections in Eunice through June were $2,710,447, down 4.6 percent — $130,981 — from the same period in 2018.
In Opelousas, the six-month total of $4,941,735, down $1,003 from the same period in 2018.
In St. Landry Parish Road District 1, which collects a 2 percent sales tax in unincorporated areas of the parish to fund the Smooth Ride Home program, the six-month total was $3,337,917, up $16,068 or 0.5 percent over the same period in 2018.
In June to June comparisons:
— Eunice sales tax collections of $436,540 were down 24 percent from June 2018.
— Opelousas sales tax comparisons of $760,993 were down 1.5 percent from June 2018.
— Road District 1 sales tax collections of $593,263 were up 6.5 percent from June 2018.
— St. Landry Parish sales collections were $5,770,510, down 7.7 percent from June 2018.
In June to May comparisons:
— Eunice sales tax collections were down up 4.5 percent from the May total of $417,852.
— Opelousas sales tax collections were up 3 percent from the May total of $767,413.
— Road District 1 sales tax collections were up 1 percent from the May total of $587,224.
— St. Landry Parish sales tax collections were up 1.9 percent from the May total of $5,663,303.
The local sales tax rates in Eunice are 2.2 percent city and 3.55 percent parish.
Local sales tax rates in unincorporated St. Landry Parish are 5.55 percent parish tax rates that includes the 2 percent Smooth Ride Home Program tax.
The sales tax numbers include a use tax, which is paid on items used, stored or consumed. The sales tax is collected on a transaction.
