The St. Landry Parish School System will ended its emergency meal program on Tuesday, according to a news release from the system.
Meals had been available at Central Middle School.
On Wednesday the school system announced that as a result of a new partnership with Three O’Clock Project , the students of St. Landry Parish School System (SPPS) will have an opportunity to receive 10 meals per week.
Lunch and breakfast for an entire week will be handed out on Mondays at the St. Landry Parish School Board Office at 1013 East Creswell Lane in Opelousas. Meals can be picked up Monday between 10 a.m. and noon. While it will not be necessary for the student to be present in the car, the parent picking the food up will need to provide the student’s name and the school he or she is currently attending.
“The number of students we feed each day continues to rise as our resources continue to diminish. In the last two weeks, we have provided over 28,000 meals to the students of SLPSS. This is indicative of the needs of our students in St. Landry Parish. We are currently exploring other options to fill that need including Meals-to-You, Healthy School Food Collaborative, and Three O’Clock Project,” the news release stated.
The St. Landry Parish School System has applied for the “Meals-to-You” Program , a program derived from a collaboration between Baylor University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the news released stated. If approved, free meals will be provided to parish students for the duration of the COVID-19 school closure .
“Another option we are exploring is The Healthy School Food Collaborative , a meal management program that would also provide meals throughout the duration of the closure.
