St. Landry Parish voters track state results

St. Landry Parish voters tracked the state results in the four statewide ballot issues in Saturday’s election.
In the race for state treasurer, state voters gave Derrick Edwards, a Democrat, 31 percent of the vote and John Schroeder, a Republican, 24 percent of the vote.
In St. Landry Parish, Edwards won 34 percent of the vote and Schroder garnered 23 percent.
Edwards and Schroder are headed for the runoff election, which is scheduled Nov. 18.
In Acadia Parish, Schroder won 34 percent of the voted followed by Angele Davis, a Republican, with 28 percent of the vote.
In Evangeline Parish, Davis won 29 percent of the vote with Schroder coming in second with 25 percent of the vote.
Other top candidates in the treasurer’s race in the statewide vote were Neil Rider, 18 percent; Davis, 22 percent; Terry Hughes, 3 percent; and Joseph D. Little, 2 percent.
All three constitutional amendments on the ballot passed.
Constitutional Amendment 1 passed with 66 percent of the vote.
The amendment question was: Do you support an amendment to exempt from property taxes materials and other property delivered to a construction site to be made part of a building or other construction?
Constitutional Amendment 2 passed with 67 percent of the vote.
The amendment questions was: Do you support an amendment to authorize an exemption from ad valorem property tax for the total assessed value of the homestead of an unmarried surviving spouse of a person who died while performing their duties as an emergency medical responder, technician, paramedic, volunteer firefighter, or a law enforcement or fire protection officer?
Constitutional Amendment 23 passed with 53 percent of the vote.
The amendment question was: Do you support an amendment that would dedicate any new tax levied on gasoline, diesel, and special fuels into the Construction Subfund, which solely shall be used for project delivery, construction, and maintenance of transportation and capital transit infrastructure projects and not for funding for the payment of employee wages and related benefits or employee retirement benefits?
In St. Landry Parish, 71 percent of the voters approved of Amendment 1; 67 percent voted for Amendment 2; and 53 percent voted for Amendment 3.
In Acadia Parish, 76 percent of the voters approved Amendment 1; 66 percent voted for Amendment 2; and 53 percent voted for Amendment 3.
In Evangeline Parish, 72 percent voted for Amendment 1; 68 percent approved Amendment 2; and Amendment 3 was spit 50-50, but 822 voters were cast against the amendment compared to 817 for it.
Also in St. Landry Parish, a 4.86-mill property tax renewal was approved in Fire District 6 for 10 years. The tax garnered 62 percent of the vote.
In Washington, Dallas Leger won 41 percent of the vote for the District 3 council seat. In second and making the runoff was Tanya Doucet with 34 percent of the vote.
In Acadia Parish, a 10-year, 9-mill property tax renewal in Iota passed with 80 percent of the vote. The tax is expected to raise about $41,000 a year and pay for road and bridge work along with necessary drainage work.
The election marked the first time early voting was held in Eunice. The second-floor St. Landry Parish Clerk of Court Office will be used again for early voting in the runoff eleciton.
Early voting also will occur at registrar of voters offices.
The deadline to register to vote through the GeauxVote Online Registration System is Oct. 28.
Early voting is Nov. 3-11 (except Nov. 5) from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
The deadline to request an absentee by mail ballot is Nov. 14 by 4:30 p.m. Voters can request an absentee by mail ballot online through our Voter Portal or in writing through your Registrar of Voters Office (other than military and overseas voters).
The deadline for a registrar of voters to receive a voted mail ballot is Nov. 17 by 4:30 p.m. (other than military and overseas voters).
