Tri-parish vote echoes state, district results

Vote counts in state and district elections in the Tri-parish area tracked the totals in Saturday’s voting.
State Treasurer John Kennedy won the U.S. Senate post left open by the retirement of Sen. David Vitter. Kennedy, a Republican, defeated Democrat and PSC Commissioner Foster Campbell with 61 percent of the vote.
In election results from the secretary of state’s website, Kenedy’s total was 536,204 votes to Campbell’s $347,813.
In St. Landry Parish, Kennedy tallied 54 percent or 7,897 votes to Campbell’s 6,853.
In Acadia Parish Kennedy won 78 percent of the vote with 9,887 votes to Campbell’s 2,753.
In Evangeline Parish, Kennedy garnered 70 percent of the votes with 3,460 to Campbell’s 1,485 votes.
Former St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Capt. Clay Higgins won a commanding victory over PSC Commissioner Scott Angelle in the 3rd Congressional District.
Higgins won 56 percent of the vote with a total of 77,670 votes to Angelle’s 60,760.
In St. Landry Parish, Higgins had 68 percent of the vote or 454 votes to Angelle’s 214 votes.
In Acadia Parish, Higgins had 70 percent of the vote or 8,760 votes to Angelle’s 3,724 votes.
In the 4th Congressional District election, Republican state Rep. Mike Johnson won with 65 percent of the vote. Johnson had 87,369 votes to Democrat Marshal Jones’ 46,578 votes.
In St. Landry Parish, Johnson won 59 percent of the votes with 4,208 votes to Jones’ 2,906 votes.
In Evangeline Parish, Johnson won 74 percent of the vote with 3,536 votes to Jones’ 1,224 votes.
Voter turnout for the senate election was 29 percent in the state.
