Vaccine mandate would make returning to LSU safer

Everyone wants college students to return in person for the fall semester. How do we make that happen safely? The surest way would be with mandated vaccination against COVID-19. This is why the American College Health Association has formally recommended COVID-19 vaccinations for students.

Fireworks legal in Eunice through July 5

Shooting fireworks in Eunice is legal from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. through July 5, according to Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot. The city does ban the use of bottle rockets also know as penny rockets. The city-sponsored fireworks displayed is scheduled at 9 p.m.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Office Arrests

The following are arrests reported by the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office. June 26-28 Cordell Ray Lastrapes, 25, 100 block of Nick Drive, Port Barre. Possession with intent to distribute Schedule I CDS, transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses. Arrested by Opelousas Police.

Mable Lavergne Thibodeaux

Mable Lavergne Thibodeaux, 92, passed away on Tuesday, June 22. She was born on Aug.13, 1928, in Eunice. Arrangements are with Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home.

Whooping crane population continues to make progress

Patience has paid off for one of Louisiana’s female whooping cranes that was a part of the initial population from 2011The female crane, designated L7-11, laid the first egg of the experimental population in 2014. However, that attempt, along with subsequent others for her, were unsuccessful.
