It’s never too late for a good belly laugh. July 1 was, unofficially, International Joke Day. The origins of the day are unclear, but whoever started it was on to something — because our country sure could use a good belly laugh about now.

LSU president talks about rice research station, LSUE

LSU President F. King Alexander focused on “two wins” involving capital improvements at LSU Eunice rather than $14 million in vetoes. Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed $13.5 million for renovations at the science building and $500,000 cafeteria repairs at the Acadian Center.

Budget bomb fizzles

What promised to be an explosive meeting on the Eunice budget passed quietly, but the controversy promises to continue. The city’s budget for fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, passed the Board of Alderman with comment coming only from Mayor Scott Fontenot.

Library breakup approved

Patrons to the Eunice Library Wednesday morning were greeted with a notice on the door that the library was closed “... due to City Council & Mayor’s decision. We will gladly fill your library needs in Opelousas until 8-1-19.

Hurricane threat developing

The National Weather Service on Wednesday was advising that a hurricane threat was increasing for the region. People should be prepared for hurricane-force winds by Saturday, with tropical force winds starting on Friday.

ACT exam at LSUE cancelled

The July 13 administration of the ACT, scheduled to be given at LSU Eunice has been canceled due in inclement weather. The reschedule date will be posted at www.actstudent.org as soon as it is set. Registered examinees will receive official notification from ACT.

Nella Marie Minner, 92, of Beaumont, Texas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 9, 2019. Nella was born on July 24, 1926 to Tolan McAuley and Attie Fontenot McAuley in Eunice. Married to the love of her life Thomas Minner Sr.
