Avoyelles School Board to award bonuses to highest-performing teachers

Avoyelles Parish teachers who came to work every day, whose students’ scores improved significantly and who helped their schools meet performance goals could receive a bonus this November. The Avoyelles School Board Education Committee was presented the bonus proposal at its Sept. 18 meeting.

Tommie Pillette named grand marshal of Erath Homecoming Parade

ERATH — Erath educator Tommie Pillette (also known as Coach P. in the community) has been selected as the 2018 Erath High School Homecoming Grand Marshal. Entering his 40th year as an educator and coach, he is a man you can count on to care about the students and the community.

Irving D. Abshire Jr.

Funeral services will be held for Irving D. Abshire Jr., 69, on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. in the Duhon Funeral Home-Crowley Chapel with Brother Gerard Morgan officiating. Visitation will begin in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Voter Registration Week observance Sept. 24 - 28

Acadia Parish Registrar of Voters Billie J. Meyer is joining Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin and registrars of voters across the state this week — Sept. 24-28 — to host Voter Registration Week activities aimed at registering eligible citizens to vote.

Josephine Harrington LeBlanc

Josephine Harrington LeBlanc, age 77, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, at 6:40 p.m. She was a native of Crowley and a resident of Houma and Lafayette.

Police jury hires new counsel

Glen E. Howie will assume the duties of general counsel for the Acadia Parish Police Jury. During a special meeting, jurors unanimously approved the appointment of Howie to replace Brad Andrus, who resigned that position last month. Jurors Chuck Broussard and Robert Guidry were not present.
