Ex-teacher get 70 years in prison for child porn

A former Vermilion Parish middle school teacher was sentenced to 70 years in prison for making and possessing child pornography, U.S. Attorney Alexander Van Hook announced in a news release. James Stacey Harber, 33, of Abbeville, previously of Ohio, was sentenced Feb. 19 by U.S.

Riverboat slots may go ashore

The chairman of a gaming task force said Thursday it would recommend that the Legislature allow riverboats to place slot machines on land up to 1,200 feet from the shore to generate more revenue and compete with casinos in Mississippi.

Doomsday budget would empty parish prisons of state inmates

Department of Public Safety and Corrections Secretary Jimmy LeBlanc said most parish jails would be unable to continue to house state prisoners if $40 million in cuts proposed in Gov. John Bel Edwards’ preliminary budget went through.

Doomsday budget cuts payments to private schools

State Superintendent of Education John White said Tuesday that the governor’s new budget would eliminate subsidized lunches and other reimbursements to private schools. The changes would save $20 million, White said.
