Two-vehicle crash in Lafayette Parish on I-49 leaves 2 juveniles dead

Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 49 near the Carencro exit in Lafayette Parish shortly before 3:30 a.m. Aug. 6. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 16-year-old Jose Alvarez of Opelousas and 16-year-old Marlin Garcia of Church Point.

Text and photos on a phone led to the arrest of an Opelousas man on four sex charges. St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz stated Maxie J. Zachary, 42, of the 800 block of Chickasaw Drive was charged on Aug.

Gov., DNR announce 500 orphaned wells plugged

Gov. John Bel Edwards and Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Secretary Tom Harris announced that contractors have plugged more than 500 orphaned well sites in the first six-and-a-half months of work funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).

Burn bans issued statewide

Burn bans have been imposed statewide. On Aug. 3, St. Landry Parish Government has issued a burn ban in the parish effective immediately. The ban includes anything with an open flame that produces an ember. The wind can carry floating embers away from the original fire and start a spot fire.

Parish sales tax collections continue growth

Staff report St. Landry Parish sales tax collections totaled $54,130,916 through July, a 3.4% increase over the same period in 2022, according to statistics released by the St. Landry Parish School Board tax division.
