Memories from the summer of 1962

June 1962 was the opening of Gurney Baseball Park. At last we had organized baseball, as we had played backyard, empty lot games with neighborhood kids. If our wooden bats broke or cracked we would nail, glue and tape them back together. So, here I was, a 9-year-old, red-hair and freckles.

Band wasn’t greatest, but was sober

A brass band playing on the town square was a prime-time affair in summers long past. Practically every community of any size had one to provide weekend concerts and to play at fairs, festivals, and celebrations like the Fourth of July.

Eunice shooting suspect identified

Eunice Police Department and St. Landry Crime Stoppers need help in locating a suspect wanted for the shooting of a 14-year-old victim in the city of Eunice. On May 4, just after 10 p.m., Eunice Police responded to a call of someone being shot in the 200 block of Acadia Street.

Perchville Road vehicle burglary suspects sought

Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating several vehicle burglaries in the Perchville Road area just south of Eunice. On June 3 during the early morning hours, two suspects entered several vehicles seeking to steal property from within.

June is National Wound Health Awareness Month and the Acadian Medical Center has a new service, Advanced Wound Care, located in the Physician’s Plaza.

Eunice Main Street is soliciting Main Street Restoration Grant applications from downtown commercial building and/or business owners. The Louisiana Main Street program offers grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000.
