The Church Point Mardi Gras Run Main Street Parade is scheduled at about 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Adult Courir de Mardi Gras begins with sign-up at 7 a.m. at the Saddle Tramp Riding Club, 1036 E. Ebey, Church Point. The run will begin at 8:30 a.m.
All runners must be at least 16 years years old.

Taster’s Choice is huge boost for health center

The 11th annual Eunice Community Health Center’s Taster’s Choice raised $35,000, according to Yancy Fontenot, the center’s executive director.
The crowd was most likely the biggest crowd ever for the event.

Student to teacher ratio may increase

The St. Landry Parish School Board will be called upon to decide on increasing the student to teacher ratio district wide at its meeting Thursday.
The Board’s Executive Committee agreed to send the policy change to the full Board at a meeting on Feb. 21.

Vincent Simmons greets family, friends, supporters and a CBS national news crew as he leaves Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola Monday night. Simmons had served 44 years of a 100-year sentence after being convicted of two counts of attempted aggravated rape in 1977. In the hearing Monday, Judge Billy Bennett ordered a new trial, citing violations of Simmons’ constitutional rights in the original trial. District Attorney Charles Riddle said he will not prosecute Simmons, thus resulting in him being free

Shouts of “He is free” pealed like bells on Marksville’s Courthouse Square Monday afternoon as family and friends of Vincent Simmons walked out of the courthouse, celebrating the end of his 44-year journey to win his freedom.

California man charged with feticide, attempted second-degree murder

A California man is charged with second-degree feticide and attempted second-degree murder in the beating of a pregnant woman.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz identified the man charged as Dion Devon Harris II, 39, of th 5900 block of West Robinson Avenue, Fresno.
