Something new is happening at Central Middle School, “Navigating Futures at Central.” Navigating Futures’ purpose and intentions is to create an increased “camaradie” among students and staff in promoting “buy-in” and building social and academic capacity for increased self-esteem.
“With great self-esteem comes self-confidence, and with self-confidence comes increased LEAP scores. Research from (EdSource.org) indicates a clear connection between positive student and staff interaction plays a significant role in student success,” added, Ranolviaun Landry, principal at the middle school.
The middle school invites guest speakers to talk with students. Students have the opportunity to have discussions with the speaker and think “outside of the box” of their regular classroom assignments. They become active and involved with the guest speakers’ job duties, thus creating a “mind-set” about future possible career paths.
Guest speakers from city and local government, local industries, school board members and other speak to groups of students about their jobs. Speakers talk in front of the classroom about their job, their duties, their job involvements, and they answer questions from students.
Landry said, “It’s an exciting adventure on campus for students, and staff, and such a great learning experience. I’m in high hopes that the school atmosphere all-around will improve, along with positive test scores, and will create great behavior skills.”
On Dec. 14, Central Middle School welcomed Mayor Scott Fontenot, Thomas Young, a crawfish farmer, Mary Ellen Donatto, school board member from St. Landry Parish schools, and Philomena Bernard, a retired St. Landry parish school counselor.
