Eunice’s Park Avenue is a broad expanse of road and median that evidently confuses motorists, walkers and joggers.
Eunice Police Chief Randy Fontenot spoke at the February city council meeting about the rules of the road and issued a memorandum on Park Avenue travel.
Traffic on Park Avenue has increased because of the bridge work at West Maple Avenue and Bobcat Drive.
Besides traffic and pedestrian flow, Fontenot said there have been complaints about walkers and joggers wearing dark-colored clothing after sundown on Park Avenue.
“We recommend they wear reflective clothing even if it is only a vest to put over clothing. That would help,” he said.
And, state law and city ordinance require pedestrians to walk facing traffic, he said.
Pedestrians also should use sidewalks if they are available, he said.
But it was the traffic flow on Park Avenue that he discussed at the council meeting.
Despite Park Avenue’s wide expanse, it is one-way east and west bound.
“You may pass on the right when the other vehicle is making a left turn and when the street is free of obstruction and of sufficient width,” he stated in the memorandum.
“But you must use caution and do so carefully and remember the vehicle you desire to pass has control of the street,” he wrote.
