All Eunice schools, including St. Edmund, will start first day of classes Wednesday. With the start of school, there will be school buses, more car traffic, and some school children walking early in the morning hours and after school hours.
Traffic will be heavier and extra police officers will be out monitoring and enforcing speed limits in school zones. Police Chief Randy Fontenot added, “Extra police officers will be out monitoring traffic before and after school hours. and making sure the flow of traffic goes smoothly.”
Fontenot is asking for all people traveling to and from school to respect all the laws regarding school zones, speed limits, and buses. “Respect, use caution. Respect all buses, watch and stop at all bus stops. No vehicle is allowed to go around a school bus that is stopped.”
All drivers are to respect all pedestrians walking at all cross walks at the schools. “All cross walks are for pedestrians. One is required to stop. They have the right away.”
There is always a standard No cell phone usage when driving and especially during the times of school traffic, and in school zones. “Just stay off the phone. There are laws there,” added Fontenot.
New to this year’s school route, and designated at Eunice Elementary, there will be bus traffic only at Fairground Avenue, and from S. 9th Street to S. 10th Street. This will be enforced between 7:15 until 7:45 a.m. and again at 3:10 until 3:30 p.m. No other traffic will be allowed during these times.
A St. Edmund School drop off and pick up route will also be enforced. See map on page 2.
