The Bobcats rushed for 217 yards and passed for 105 more in Eunice’s 24-0 season-opening win over Opelousas High.
But in the Bobcats’ 26-10 loss to Jennings, the Bulldogs gained 263 yards on the ground, while Eunice was limited to 150 yards of toal offense.
After Hurricane Harvey forced the cancellation of Rayne’s game against Welsh, the Wolves rolled to a 47-6 win over Lake Charles College Prep last Friday.
“I think they may be a better team than Jennings,” Eunice head coach Paul Trosclair said, “and you see what happened to us against Jennings.”
Rayne gained 417 yards rushing against the Blazers, led by Trent Winbush (11 carries for 270 yards) and Darien Harmon (11 carries for 140 yards).
Winbush scored on runs of 61, 45, 58 and 64 yards, while Harmon scored the game’s first points on a 66-yard run.
“No one has stopped their running game the last two years,” Trosclair said of the Wolves. “That will be a huge challenge.”
Last season, the Bobcats put on an aerial show, accounting for 222 yards of passing, but the Wolves went to the ground attack, rushing for 271 yards to clip Eunice, 28-27.
Eunice quarterback Jaden Brasseaux completed 17 of 21 passes for 222 yards, and Avery Lee rushed 23 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
In last year’s game Harmon finished with 132 yards on 17 carries, while Winbush had 106 yards on 22 carries.
“If we don’t follow the game plan then we won’t have a chance,” Trosclair said. “The guys need to be in the right spot and make the plays – if they aren’t in the right spot then they can’t make the play.
“It is important that we play very disciplined in our approach,” the coach said. “We missed that against Jennings and it cost us on both sides of the ball.”
Trosclair said it is important to move the ball and score points to have a chance to win.
“Our kids will give great effort,” he said. “We just have to eliminate mistakes and have some breaks.”
