School Board to honor veterans
The St. Landry Parish School Board in partnership with the LHC Group will recognize its present and former employees who who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
This recognition will be in conjunction with the Nov. 2 School Board meeting, which is will be held at 4 p.m. at the Opelousas Civic Center.
The program will include presentation of the colors; national anthem followed by pledge of allegiance; parade of veterans; and presentation of a veteran lapel pin and certificates of recognition.
All veteran employees are asked to complete the registration form provided on the School Board website: slp.k12.la.us.
The form must be returned via e-mail to pmg7660@slp.k12.la.us or brought to the School Board Resource Center by Thursday to the attention of: Pat Mason-Guillory, coordinator.

Carron Cemetery blessing Sunday
The annual blessing of the graves will be conducted at Carron Cemetery at noon Sunday by a representative of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. The Carron Cemetery Family Alliance (CCFA) encourages all descendants of people buried there to prepare for the event by cleaning/painting the family grave sites, as well as maintaining any nearby graves which appear to have no family left or able to perform this task.
One of the oldest cemeteries in the Eunice area, Carron Cemetery existed before the founding of the City of Eunice and has five soldiers interred there who served in The War Between The States.
The CCFA is a group of descendants related by blood or marriage to those buried at Carron. The group’s purpose is to preserve this historic cemetery and increase family awareness of the need for continued upkeep of their ancestor’s graves.

Concealed handgun classes offered
Non-profit classes for a concealed handgun permit are scheduled Oct. 28, Nov. 11 and Dec. 9 at the Masonic Lodge, 211 W. Park Ave., Eunice, according to an announcement from Maj. Eddie Thibodeaux of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The courses include all the requirements needed for application to the state for a carrying a concealed handgun, but does not include the state fee. The course cost $100 and a spouse may attend for another $80.
Classes start at 7:30 p.m. and includes classroom instruction, applications, notary, fingerprints, firing range, a hot lunch, refreshments all day, and a certificate of completion as required by the state.
The course is taught by certified police instructors.
Participants should bring a photo identification, cash or check, handgun and a box of ammunition.

IHS mattress fundraiser set Nov. 12
The first annual Iota High School Mattress fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12 at the Iota High School gymnasium.
Every purchase will benefit Iota High School band.
All size will be available, name brands offered, layaway and delivery available. Accepting cash, check and credit card.

LSUE French Table meet Fridays
The LSUE French Table will be from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Fridays at LSUE Continuing Ed Building, Room 117, next to baseball field.
On Nov. 3, a discussion of “ways of showing dislike for something or someone”.
On Nov. 10, a discussion of early toys for children.
The event is free, and welcomed to all. Coffee will be served.

Halloween 5K Glow Run set Oct. 29
The Iota High Beta Club will sponsor a Halloween 5-K Glow Run at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Iota City Hall pavilion.
Race day registration and packet pick up will be from 6 to 6:45 p.m. with race start time at 7 p.m.
There will be trophies and medals awarded and pre-registration is $30 and due by Oct. 22. Race day registration is $40.

Cameron’s Shoes 5K Run set Oct. 28
The annual Cameron’s Shoes Foundation 5K Charity Run/Walk will be held from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Oct. 28 at LSUE campus, in conjunction with annual Experience Louisiana Festival.
Cameron’s Shoes, a charity foundation, formed and created by Stevie Guillory, a native of Eunice, provides shoes to poverty stricken families in Cali, Columbia.

Word Ministries 10-year celebration
Word Ministries in Eunice will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary Oct. 26, 28 and 29.
There will be a Hallelujuah Praise on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.; A Holy Ghost Party on Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. and on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. there will be a guest minister Pastor Allen W. Ben from New Zion Baptist Church and Zion Travelers Church.

Family Fun Day at Pilgrim Rest
Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church will have a Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at the church grounds, located at 1154 Academy Road, Eunice.
There will be music, games, food.

Veterans Day celebration set Nov. 11
The Veterans Day celebration will be held Nov. 11 at the VFW Post 8971 on Hwy. 190, Eunice.
Families of Veterans are invited to attend the ceremony at 11 a.m. There will be an introduction of Veterans and a Flag Retiring ceremony.
Lunch will be provided by sponsors of the American Legion, DAV and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8971.

Free child car seat installation
Free installation of child car safety seats is being offered from 4 to 6 p.m. every Monday at Word Ministries, 1960 W. Laurel Ave., Eunice.
The seats will be installed by a nationally certified technicians.

Saturday programs at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center
Saturday programs at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, 250 W. Park Ave., Eunice, are the Explore & Restore craft workshop for kids, from 10 a.m. to noon; Cajun Conversations meets 1 to 2:30 p.m. to learn and practice conversational Cajun French; Music and dancing kicks off at 2:45 p.m. and ends with the cooking demonstration and sampling at 4 p.m. Admission to the center and programs is free.

VFW bingo held Thursdays, Sundays
The VFW Post 8971 holds bingo for the public at 7 p.m. every Thursday and Sunday at the VFW Hall located on U.S. 190 East. All proceeds from Bingo games goes back to the community.

Knights of Columbus sells white crosses
The Eunice Knights of Columbus Council 1745 is currently selling white crosses to be placed in yards.
The crosses are available from Bill Parrie at 251 N. 6th St., or at Bertrand’s Printing, or in front of St. Anthony Church after each morning Mass at 7 a.m., 9 a.m., and 11 a.m.
A $5 donation is requested.
