Dr. MLK celebration set Jan. 13-14
The Dr. MLK City Wide Celebration in Eunice will begin with a Prayer Breakfast at 9 .m. Jan. 13 at the New Zion Baptist Church gym with guest speaker Rev. Caleb Simien.
There will be a parade on Jan. 14 with line up beginning at City Hall at 12:30 p.m. and parade at 2 p.m. There will be a program at 3 p.m. at the New Zion Baptist Church with keynote speaker Michael Victorian of Baton Rouge, president of 100 Black Men.

Eunice Players’ board meeting set Jan. 16
The Eunice Players’ Theatre will hold its general board meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 at the theater.
This meeting is open to all season ticket holders and all are encouraged to attend. A discussion of theupcoming Irving Awards and 2018 season will be part of the meeting.

Acadia election board to meet
A meeting of the Acadia Parish Board of Election Supervisors will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 12, in the Registrar of Voters Office, 568 NW Court Circle, Crowley, to draw the commissioner-in-charge for the year 2018.
The meeting shall be open to the public.
Concert to help hurricane victims
The St. Landry Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Council will host the Rocking the Hurricanes benefit concert in Opelousas from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Yambilee Arena.
The proceeds will go toward Hurricane Harvey relief funds .
Local musicians include The Jaxon Meche Band, The Vibrant Somethings, and Clay Cormier and the Highway Boys.
This is a family friendly event and is open to the public, the St. Landry Chamber’s Youth Leadership Council aims to bring the community together for a good cause through music, says event manager and council member Elizabeth Fruge .
“Each year the YLC comes together to create a project the benefits our community. This year’s event has the opportunity to not only provide great entertainment for our own community but benefit other communities effected by recent hurricane,” Fruge said.
Admission will be $5 per person and can be purchased at the door of the Yambilee Arena, located at 1959 W. Landry St. in Opelousas the day of the event. Concessions will be available.

ABC Men’s Retreat set Jan. 19-20
Acadian Baptist Center, near Richard, will host a Men’s Retreat on Jan 19-20.
The theme of this seminar will be “Being a Man of God.” Speakers will be Dr. Tim Moffett, pastor of First Baptist Church of Eunice; Dr. Perry Hubbs, pastor of First Baptist Church of Opelousas; and Pastor Kevin West of First Baptist Church of Ville Platte.
Music will be provided by Chad Boudreaux of First Baptist Church of Crowley.
Cost for the event is $65, including meals and lodging; $35 for commuters, including meals.

Acadian Baptist Center to hold children’s retreat
Acadian Baptist Center near Richard is holding a children’s retreat for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade, Jan. 26-27.
The camp will involve the search and discovery of the “Big Foot.”

Black Women Achievements Against The Odds Jan. 28
The city of Eunice invites the public to a festival parade, program and exhibit, “Black Women Against the Odds,” on Jan. 28.
Keynote speaker and parade marshal will be a Eunice native Col. Dr. Gwendolyn Hebert Thompson.
There will be a parade beginning at the Southeast Center at 2 p.m. and will conclude at the Liberty Theater with a program at 3 p.m. Afterwards the City Hall lobby will have an exhibit of Black Women Achievement Against the Odds.

Lafayette Genealogical Society to meet
The Lafayette Genealogical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 18, at the Southside Branch, Lafayette Public Library, 6101 Johnston St., Lafayette.
Speakers are Society members, Kathy Higginbotham and Donna Latiolais, who will explain how to access from home both Louisiana and Bureau of Land Management historical land records and how to compare that information to present day maps.
