Girls playoffs begin Thursday

Eight local teams begin the girls basketball playoffs today with the hopes of beginning the trek to the state tournament in Alexandria.
In Class 3-A, No. 14 Eunice (17-10) will entertain No. 19 Avoyelles (21-9) at 6:30 p.m. today.
This is third time the Lady Bobcats have earned a playoff berth.
The last time the Lady Bobcats made the playoffs was in 2014 against Class 4-A Ellender.
The first time EHS earned a playoff berth was in 2005 when the 17-9 Lady Cats faced Bastrop.
No. 30 Church Point (10-16) will visit District 5-3A rival Northwest (26-3).
In another district repeat, No. 26 Mamou (9-16) travels to No. 7 Iota (23-7).
The Lady Green Demons advanced to the Class 2-A quarterfinals last season with wins over South Plaquemines, Lakeview and Rapides before falling to No. 4 Rayville.
Iota advanced to the Class 3-A quarterfinals last year with wins over Lutcher, Booker T. Washington and Madison before losing 52-50 to Albany.
In Class 2-A, Ville Platte (7-14) travels to No, 5 Red River (20-9).
The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the Class 3-A state semifinals with wins over Franklin, Wossman and Iowa before falling to No. 1 South Beauregard.
In Class 1-A, No. 23 Basile (10-19) visits No. 10 Gueydan (14-16).
Last season, the Lady Bearcats opened the playoffs with a road win over Centerville before falling to top-seed Arcadia.
In Division IV action, No. 15 St. Edmund (101-6) will play host to No. 19 St. Frederick at 6 p.m. today.
The Lady Jays received a first-round bye last season before losing to Ascension Christian.
Also in Div. IV, No. 20 Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (6-19) visits No. 13 Ouachita Christian (6-13).
The state tournament will be held Feb. 26 - March 3 at the Rapides Coliseum in Alexandria.
