LEBEAU – The streak continues as the Eunice High Lady Bobcats captured a sixth straight St. Landry Parish track championship.
The parish meet was held at North Central’s athletic complex as the Lady Cats finished with 143 points to move ahead of Northwest (97), Opelousas High (90), Beau Chene (87), North Central (60), Westminster Christian Academy (53) and Port Barre (6).
“We came in with a young team,” second-year girls track head caoch Andre Vige said about the team. “But credit the girls ofr working hard and I think our depth paid off in the end.
“Winning six in a row is kind of hard to do,” Vige said. “You figure some one is going to have an up year and you are going to have a down year – it is pretty impressive.”
Eunice’s Stacie White was named Outstanding Field Performer.
“Stacie has natural ability and she can do it all,” Vige said. “But in track you can’t rely on just one person, it has to be a group effort.”
White finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.36.
A’mya Johnwell won the 100-meter dash (13.2) and the 200 meters ((27.75).
Cadence Green won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 55.85 just ahead of team mate La’tia Green (56.58).
Katherine Rougeau captured the javelin competition with a toss of 105-8, followed by White (93-1).
Robbi Palmer won the high jump with a leap of 4-10, followed by White (4-8).
Kim Poullard finished second in the shot put with a throw of 30-8.5.
“I give credit to our field,” the coach said. We were first and second in the javelin. We were first and second in the high jump and Kim Poullard has been a pleasant surprise.
“When we got the points in the field, I felt good,” Vige said. “But after 100 meters I felt that we would be fine.”
Johnwell, Zakayla Citizen, Shania Toussaint and Leah Walker won the 400-meter relay with a time of 51.91.
“We were in third place in the race when Leah got the baton,” the coach reflected. “As our anchor leg she overcame that to win – that help spark us as a team.”
Johnwell, Jesslyn Reed, Toussaint and Walker won the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:47.5.
Citizen, White, Palmer and Reed finished third in the 1600- meter relay with a time of 4:26.6)
“Winning the parish title is great,” Vige said. “Now we have set our goal on winning the District 5-3A championship.”
The Lady Cats have won the past six district titles as former girls coach Durell Peloquin helped build the powerhouse before becoming the athletic director at Oberlin.
Northwest won the boys title with 146 points, followed by Beau Chene (128), Eunice (105), Opelousas (76), North Central (61), Port Barre (23) and Westminster (18).
Eunice High’s Brody Gaspard won the discus with a toss of 133.
Avery Lee captured the javelin competition with throw of 155-9.
Javondre Edwards finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.24.
Edwards finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.5.
Loranzo Thomas finished second in the shot put at 44-6.
Carneleous Lewis finished second in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.
Gavin Higginbothom finished third in the pole vault at 10-6.
Trevin Ceaser finished third in the 100-meters with a time of 11.82.
Eunice will compete in the Church Point meet on April 11 and the district meet will be held on April 17 at Iota.
