Blood drives in Eunice, Opelousas
The public is asked to donate blood at two events for the Our Lady of Lourdes Donor Center.
The blood drives will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 17 at the Delta Grand Theater, 120 Market St., Opelousas, and at the Eunice Municipal Complex, 300 S. 2nd St., Eunice.
The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is pairing with Eunice and Opelousas police in blood drives noted as “Donate for bragging rights.”
Donors are asked to bring photo identification and eat before donating.
United Way Yard Bird Cook-off set
St. Landry-Evangeline United Way will present a Yard Bird Cook-Off from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Opelousas Courthouse Square, located at the corner of Court and Bellevue Streets, in Opelousas.
The event is free and open to the public. There will be live entertainment by Southwinz Band K-Bon’s Big Al and more, silent auction, raffle, fun jump, face painting, and much more.
Registration for cook-off teams are $50 per team.

Eunice Food Bank is in need of a van
Help out the Eunice Food Bank. The food bank is in dire need of a van to transport/ pick up food items. This van be an older used make/model or preferably a donated vehicle.

Postal carrier food drive May 12
The annual National US Postal carrier food drive is set for Saturday, May 12.
Those residents wishing to donate non perishable food items and canned goods are asked to leave a bag next to their mail box on this date.
All food items will be collected by a letter carrier and brought directly to the Eunice Food Bank.

The EHS Class of 2018 Baccalaureate Services will be held at 2 p.m. May 13 at the New Zion Baptist Church in Eunice.
Rendez-Vous De Cajuns at Liberty
The Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler Au Rendez-Vous De Cajuns is scheduled at the Liberty every from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday with live entertainment.
The Liberty opens at 4 p.m. the show begins at 6 p.m.

Summer Reading program registration
The Eunice Public Library will have its Summer Reading program and registration is set for May 29 and last date to regsiter is July 2.
StoryTime hours designed for children are to begin Wednesday, June 6, at 10:39 a.m. upstairs in the children’s library. Children will be able to listen to a story, create a craft, eat a snack, win door prizes. Other dates of StoryTime are June 20, June 27, July 11, and July 18.
Elementary Pre-k registration dates set
All Eunice elementary schools (East, Eunice, Glendale and Highland) are conducting pre-k registration. Visit your child’s zoned school to sign up for a testing date.
In order to be eligible for Pre-k, a child must be four (4) years old on or before Sept. 30.
The following documents will be required on your child’s testing day to register for Pre-k:
–Child’s birth certificate
–Child’s immunization record (current)
–Proof of residency (utility bill with parents name and address)
–Proof of income: Bring one of the following:
Two consecutive check stubs, SNAP verification letter.
Concealed handgun classes offered
Non-profit classes for a concealed handgun permit are scheduled May 12, June 23, July 21, Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 13, Nov. 10, and Dec. 8, at the Masonic Lodge, 211 W. Park Ave., Eunice, according to an announcement from Maj. Eddie Thibodeaux of the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The courses include all the requirements needed for application to the state for a carrying a concealed handgun, but does not include the state fee.
The course cost $100 and a spouse may attend for another $80.
Classes start at 7:30 a.m. and include classroom instruction, applications, notary, fingerprints, firing range, a hot lunch, refreshments all day, and a certificate of completion as required by the state.
The course is taught by certified police instructors.
Participants should bring a photo identification, cash or check, handgun and a box of ammunition.

IHS All Sports Backers fundraiser
The Iota High School All Sports Backers fundraiser, named “Prize-a-Palooza,” is underway.
Anyone who purchases a ticket has a chance to win one or more of 31 prizes.
Tickets are $50 each and only 1,000 will be sold.
Tickets can be purchase from any athlete at Iota High or at the IHS front office.
A drawing will be held every day, and coincide with the Pick Three numbers in July.

Free installation of child car safety seats is being offered from 4 to 6 p.m. every Monday at Word Ministries, 1960 W. Laurel Ave., Eunice.
The seats will be installed by a nationally certified technicians.
Saturday programs at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center
Saturday programs at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, 250 W. Park Ave., Eunice, are the Explore & Restore craft workshop for kids, from 10 a.m. to noon; Cajun Conversations meets 1 to 2:30 p.m. to learn and practice conversational Cajun French; Music and dancing kicks off at 2:45 p.m. and ends with the cooking demonstration and sampling at 4 p.m. Admission to the center and programs is free.

VFW bingo held Thursdays, Sundays
The VFW Post 8971 holds bingo for the public at 7 p.m. every Thursday and Sunday at the VFW Hall located on U.S. 190 East. All proceeds from Bingo games goes back to the community.
