The city will pave sections of 23 streets beginning in late July in an overlay program that occurs every other year.
Mayor Scott Fontenot released the list of the streets Thursday and the estimates, which total $1,030,000.
The city advertised for bids in Thursday’s Eunice News.
The mayor expects aldermen will be able to approve a bid at the June meeting.
Once a bid is accepted it takes about 45 days for a contractor to begin work, he said.
The road work totals about 3.7 miles. The city has from 50 to 60 miles of roads.
The road program has been ongoing for about 20 years, he said.
“We’ve been putting about the same amount of funding into it every year,” he said.
That means as costs rise the city hasn’t been able to do as many roads as in the past, he said.
The city targeted the worst streets this year, he said.
“I think if we continue to do it this route then we can really kind of start to get ahead,” He said.
Two years ago, Aldermen Jack Burson and Marion “Nootsie” Sattler pooled their resources to repair the roads in University Place, he said.
“So, we are starting to work more together on this,” he said.
Fontenot said the city is looking to redo intersections.
One example is South Martin Luther King and East Maple. The intersection needs repair, but the roads are mostly in good condition, he said.
A long term goal is to repair West Park Avenue and 2nd Street, he said.
The money to do so may come from the state’s Right Sizing program.
The state would redo College Road and its two bridges and then turn the road over to the city. In return, the city would receive 40 years of maintenance funding from the state, he said.
The maintenance money would be used for the work on Park and 2nd, he said.
But that deal is probably two years away, he said.
Fontenot said he has met with State Rep. Phillip DeVillier on the plan.
The city also is receiving a $450,867 state grant to improve 11 streets in the Happy Hill area of northeast Eunice.
The streets to be improved include Mathilde, Kyries Hebert, Fruge, Stone, Goldman, Weaver, Aferica, (north) Beulah, (east) Vine, (east) Peach and Clark.
