Toddler found on street, mom is in jail

A 2-year-old boy was found on the road at 200 E. Maple Ave. at 4:13 a.m. Wednesday and by 7 a.m. the 21-year-old mother was in Eunice Police custody.
Police Chief Randy Fontenot said Amalfi Ilona Watley, 21, 1600 block of Lawrence Street, Opelousas, was charged with improper supervision of a minor by a parent or legal custodian.
When police officers arrived at the East Maple Avenue location they found the child in diapers.
“On arrival the officers recognized the child as that of the one found last month on the PerchvilleRoad,” Fontneot said.
“The child also recognized the officers and put his hand up for the officer to take,” he said.
The investigation found the mother and her partner left to go to work. The child was left with someone, but the residence not secured, he said.
The person the child was left with was asleep and the front door was was covered with a mesh screen to keep insects out.
Whether the door was shut or not when the couple left had not been determined Wednesday morning, he said.
“They’ve had other times when the child had gotten out of the house,” Fontenot said.
The residence is in the Sunrise Apartments in the 800 block of South Beulah.
The child was found a one-third of a mile from the residence.
In the first instance, the child was found on the road at South Vivian Avenue and Perchville Road, he said.
Watley was charged on April 22 in the first event.
The child was not injured in either incident, he said.
In the April incident, police think the child was let out of a vehicle.
