I will be celebrating my 40th high school class reunion from Eunice High School next week. (Yes, I know, I don’t look that old, ha!)
I started thinking earlier this week, what happened or what events took place in Eunice in 1978. I did my research at my work desk and this is what I discovered.
In early May of 1978: The grand opening of Rozas Shoe Store located at Westgate Shopping Center was held Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “Shoe” Cutting ceremonies were April 27 at 9 a.m. Those present included Linda Courville, Maxie Rozas, Katie Rozas, Donna Rozas, Jerome Rozas, owner; Mayor Moosa, Alderman John Babineaux, Alderman Mike Dupre, Warner Veillon, P.J. Baker, John Rozas, Leola Courville, Elday Rozas, Father Donald Leger, R.P. Fontenot and Sam Scherer. The ceremony began with an invocation by Father Leger. A drawing was held at noon Saturday to determine winners of three gift certificates given away. Winners were as follows, Ruth Self, $15 certificate; Darlene Deville, $10 certificate; and Judy Cormier, $5 certificate.
Showing at the Liberty Theatre, Held over through Thursday, “Godzilla on Monster Island”, and starts Friday, “Saturday Night Fever.” At The Queen Cinema, held over through Wednesday, “George Peppard in Five Days from Home,” and starts Thursday, “Everybody Loves a Winner ‘Coach.’
The senior class of 1978 conducted a promotion to raise money for a trip. A fat calf, cut and wrapped was donated by Murphy Richard, and Mrs. Annie Lee Fontenot donated a afghan. Winner of the calf was Cecil Roy and winner of the afghan was J.L. Smith. At the presentation were Mrs. Annie Fontenot, Kelly Keller, Angie Bollich, Carla Heinen, Kirk Stelly and Murphy Richard.
New wind breakers and a tennis net had been installed at the Amy tennis court. Shown inspecting the net in The Eunice News, were, Michael Dupre, Ward 2 councilman; Mayor Wilson Moosa; Burley Bertrand, street commissioner; Roy Clavier and Narcus Cormier.
Exercising their right at the polls were St. Ed students, who voted on next years’ student council. In a photo, there were Billy Bertrand, John Brown, Ramon Brown, Brendon Leger, in booth; Michelle Dossman, Tina Gillard and resetting the machine was Cy Ardoin.
Which one of these lovely young ladies will be crowned Miss Eunice 1978? The next Miss Eunice was to be crowned at 8 p.m. June 10 in the Eunice High School auditorium. The contestants included Cindi Manuel, Paula Broussard, Myra Fruge, Pam Capel, Sandra Lejeune, Catherine Manuel, Renee Manuel, Jana Moore, Madonna Veillon and Karen Ardoin. The contest is sponsored annually by the XiBeta Theta of Beta Sigma Phi.
Lori Hail played the “brat from upstairs” in the Players’ Theatre production “Wait Until Dark,” which ran May 8 to 13 in Eunice.
Randall Ward, shortstop for the Eunice High baseball team helped the team to a first place finish in District 4-AAA. The Cats had a won-lost record of 15-7, and garnered a berth in the state playoffs. First baseman T.C. Chachere was a heavy hitter for the Eunice High Bobcats baseball team. The team went 15-7 for the year, while capturing the district championship and earning a spot in the state playoffs.
Carl Faul, a pitcher for the Eunice High School Bobcats, helped the team to a 15-7 season record and a spot in the state playoff.
Darryl Carrier was one of the reasons why Eunice High won the District 4 -AAA baseball championship. Carrier was a pitcher on the team, wich closed out the season with a heart-breaking 3-1 loss to Tioga in the bi-district playoffs.
Present each day for 12 years were these four St. Landry Parish public school graduating seniors who were honored at the school board meeting Thursday. Supt. John R. Dupre presented a certificate to each of the four seniors. The students are shown with Alden Vige, school board supervisor of child welfare and attendance. Mr. and Mrs. J.E. “Boo” Ledoux present a copy of “Bicentennial Wagon Train Pilgrimage” to Dot Mayer, Opelousas-Eunice public librarian. The LeDouxs made the trip in Louisiana’s wagon to Valley Forge, Pa. in 1976. The book was donated in memory of the mothers of Mr. and Mrs. LeDoux, Ella F. LeDoux and Eva G. Buller.
These tennis players represented St. Edmund last weekend in the state tennis tournament in New Orleans The photo was shot Friday afternoon just before they left for the Crescent City, and members are from left Diaunne Dischler, Brett Verzwyvelt, Michelle Pavich, Stewart Rozas, and Nanette Richard. The team members won the right to participate in the state tourney with wins in the regional tourney. Coach Ann Fruge coaches the girls and Dr. Sammy Stagg is the coach for the boys.
