BASILE -- The Mamou Demons were double teamed Friday night by a dominant Basile Bearcat team and numerous penalties and miscues that cost them a tough 36-0 loss.
Basile moves to 1-1 on the season and will host the Sacred Heart Trojans this Friday night. With the loss Mamou falls to 0-2 on the year and will face the St. Edmund Blue Jays at home Friday night.
The Bearcats put on quite a show Friday night against the Demons racking up tremendous numbers both offensively and defensively. On the night, Basile scorched Mamou for 317 total yards while holding the Demons to a paltry 129 yards of offense.
“The players work so hard and its great to see them showcase it,” stated Basile head coach Kevin Bertrand. “On any given down, someone can make a play and they are all stepping up and doing that. It was great to come in here and bounce back after a tough loss last week. We are continuing to improve every week and it shows.”
Basile started off with a bang, scoring on the second play from scrimmage. Taking the opening kick off at their 47-yard line, the Bearcats hit a home run on second down when Isaiah Ceasar took the handoff and blasted past the Mamou defense for a 51 yard touchdown run. Abdul Mlingo tacked on the extra point and with 11:02 left in the first quarter Basile led 7-0.
The two teams traded possessions, with the Bearcats gaining field advantage in the exchange. Pinning the Demons back at their one-yard line, Basile came up with a huge defensive play.
After Mamou was able to pick up a couple of first downs, the Demons faced a third and 12 from their 20-yard line. On the very next play, Bearcat linebacker Andre Reed stepped in front of a Mamou pass and picked the ball off bringing it to the down at the Demon 34-yard line.
Not wasting any time, Basile needed only four plays to score once again. On first and goal from the nine-yard line, Reed busted his way in to the end zone for the second touchdown. Mlingo added the extra point putting the Bearcats up 14-0 with 2:03 left in the first quarter.
With Mamou down by two scores, they could ill afford to make any mistakes. But, that is just what happened on their next possession.
Getting the ball back at their 31-yard line after the ensuing kickoff, the Demons shot themselves in the foot by snapping the ball over the quarterback’s head twice in three plays. With those miscues, Mamou found themselves having to punt from their end zone.
After the kick, Basile took over possession at the Demon 46-yard line. And, just like the previous scoring drives, the Bearcats wasted no time in putting up more points, as quarterback Dawson Ashford hit Jaylen Thomas on a 37 yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed giving Basile a 20-0 lead only seven seconds into the second quarter.
Later in the period, the Bearcats extended their lead when Mlingo connected on a 32 yard field goal, putting the Beacats up 23-0 with 2:35 to go until half time.
That lead held up until the teams headed into the locker room.
In the second half, Basile continued to dominate the Demons, adding two more touchdowns to their total. Reed plunged into the end zone on a two yard run in the third quarter and Logan David sprinted 13 yards for the score in the fourth quarter. Mlingo tacked on the extra point after the Reed touchdown and the two-point conversion failed after the David score.
David led all Bearcats on the ground, collecting 88 yards on six carries. Ceasar added another 85 yards on seven rushes.
Ashford was five of nine passing for 70 yards and a touchdown. Thomas gathered in three balls for 56 yards and a score to lead Basile in receiving.
Bernard Oneail carried the ball seven times for 34 yards to lead the Demons. Jaylen Bradley completed six of 10 passes for 83 yards for Mamou. Dino Deshotel caught four passes for 71 yards.
