Danny Chambliss, 44, of St. Landry, was killed when he walked into the path of a vehicle on La. 106 at La. 3042 at 4:30 a.m. Sept. 26, according to a Louisiana State Police Troop I news release.
For reasons still under investigation, Chambliss walked into the path of an eastbound 2005 Ford Ranger driven by 19-year-old Landon Fontenot of Ville Platte, police stated. Chambliss was struck by Fontenot’s vehicle in the eastbound lane of La. 106.
Chambliss sustained fatal injuries a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by an Evangeline Parish Coroner’s Office representative. Fontenot was properly restrained and was not injured. Impairment is not suspected, but routine toxicology tests are pending.
Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Troopers urge pedestrians to maintain a heightened level of awareness while walking near the roadway. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, and walking a safe distance from travel lanes while facing oncoming traffic could help prevent many pedestrian related crashes.
